When the waves have settled down

The waves will settle down. The sea falls silent. Who will listen to the breaths of life?

The tree crowns will remain motionless. The forest fades. Who will tread the trail of destiny?

Such visions and questions went through the angel’s mind. Floating with a worried, embracing gaze over humankind. Soon the human spirit becomes unnoticed. The green highlands will not be climbed. The earth will miss the children’s play. Who will gaze at the stars and wonder about the universe?

Such images went through the angel’s mind. Hovering with compassion for humankind. Maybe the presence of humans will once anew be accepted by Earth? When the waves roll. Maybe the land once again will enjoy the vibrations of children’s laugh?

The angel knows the waves will settle down. An inevitable effect of humankind’s choices. For the angel, the pale silence will last for a second. Humans will never again ascend the green hills. But not even the angel can with certainty foresee whether evolution will reiterate, or other intelligent life forms will emerge.

Such thoughts filled the angel’s being. Floating. Already missing. For a second and an eternity, no one will experience what it is like to be human. When the waves have settled down.
